CHAPTER TEN

He was going to be a father.

NOTHING ELSE MATTERED. Staring out over the starboard rail, he realised how much he loved wild, elemental weather. It suited his nature, he supposed. He loved anything with a challenge attached—except for one, infuriating woman. ‘Sienna!’ He whirled around. ‘What are you doing out here? Can’t you see how dangerous it is?’

‘But safe for you?’ she suggested.

He wasn’t a pregnant woman. Taking hold of her, he steadied her, to keep her safe.

She felt so warm and soft in his arms. It would be easy to forget how strong Sienna was. ‘This weather is dangerous.’

‘And you’re not?’ she said with a lift of her chin. ‘Lucky you don’t frighten me.’

‘Evidently,’ he agreed.

Guiding her back inside, he took her to his study. ‘Can we talk now?’ she asked as he closed the door.

‘Of course.’

‘What were you thinking out there?’

‘How to kidnap my next victim,’ he suggested, tongue in cheek.

She almost smiled, and then said, ‘Truce?’

‘Coming from you, I take that as a compliment.’

‘Don’t,’ she warned, turning serious. ‘I’m only suggesting a truce between us because, very soon, there will be a very important addition to you and me.’

‘For once, I agree with you,’ he confirmed, surprising himself by how relieved he was that they were talking again. Life without Sienna was something he was finding increasingly hard to imagine. Everything he’d once thought important had been relegated to a distant second place. Nothing mattered more to him than the welfare of mother and baby. It was because of that that he’d keep her close, as his father had cared for his mother throughout all her pregnancies. Except, unlike his own mother, Sienna would never have to work another day in her life if she didn’t want to. Remembering this, he smiled. Sienna would be right up there with the best of mothers. Her warmth, strength and resilience would make sure of that. She’d be the bedrock of any family.

His family?

He shifted in his seat. Love was the final taboo. Like a distant promise he didn’t deserve, it was a reality for so many, but not for him. Until he could forgive himself for allowing his parents to take that flight, he could never rejoice about anything fully, because that only brought on crushing guilt. Destined to go through life wondering, if he’d called his parents, could he have stopped them taking that flight had left him incapable of relaxing his hold on anything it was possible to control. Only by concentrating on the practical could he blank out the emotion.

‘Alejandro?’ Sienna prompted with concern. ‘You okay?’

‘Yes,’ he said in a distracted monotone.

‘Come and look,’ she said, grabbing his hand briefly in her excitement to look out of the window. ‘I can’t believe this. The rain has stopped, the wind has dropped, and the sea is as flat as a pancake.’

‘That’s the magic pull of the island.’ In spite of his doubts about Sienna, she’d been through a lot, and he couldn’t deny that it felt good to see her smile.
